Costa Mesa car accidents are overwhelming the city. With a population over 110,000 and growing, Costa Mesa, California, continues to suffer too many car accidents, which experts blame on a variety of problems. Among these problems is a troublesome intersection–one of the busiest in Orange County–situated near several off- and onramps to the San Diego Freeway. Cars in the vicinity of South Coast Plaza, the Metro Pointe shopping mall, and several high-density residential areas often overload traffic arteries.

Analysts have suggested that motorists tend to adopt a ‘freeway driving’ mentality when they get off the freeway. They blame many red-light runners for this mindset. A countywide study by the Automobile Club of Southern California backs this up. It found that intersections located next to freeways have the most car accidents caused by red-light runners.

Nationally, motorists who run red lights kill over 1,000 people per year and injure over 250,000. Tragically, pedestrians are struck in over half the intersection accidents caused by red-light runners. Overall, men are twice as likely to speed through an intersection as women are. Additionally, most red-light runners are college educated.

In a sign of the times, Costa Mesa Police Department noted that at least 40 percent of violators caught on the city’s red-light cameras were talking on cell phones. Costa Mesa installed red-light cameras at various intersections to nab the speeding scofflaws. A year after the cameras went up, the accident rate decreased by 28.2 percent.

Motorists who are driving under the influence pose another big challenge for Costa Mesa. According to Costa Mesa Police, the city has the second highest number of DUI arrests in the state. In a recent year, half of all fatal car crashes in Costa Mesa was DUI related.

Adding to these troubling statistics are those reported by the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). In 2006, 11 people were killed in Costa Mesa car accidents and 855 were injured. Alcohol-related accidents accounted for six fatalities and 104 injuries. Motorcycle accidents killed two persons and injured 60. Two pedestrians lost their lives and 40 were injured in car accidents.

To bring down the number of car accidents in Costa Mesa, the Police Department conducted a sobriety checkpoint in March, 2009–at northbound Harbor Boulevard south of Gisler Avenue. As many as 1,349 vehicles drove through the checkpoint and 364 were stopped. Of these, 34 drivers were screened for DUI, which resulted in four DUI arrests. In addition, five drivers were cited for driving without a license and another five were cited for driving on suspended licenses. One driver was arrested for a warrant and another arrested for being intoxicated in public. A total of 10 citations were issued for miscellaneous vehicle code violations and 10 cars were impounded.

Car LED lights operation depends on its operating environment, therefore, at a very high temperature above the room temperature, the major functional component can be affected. ?Therefore, overheating can result to failure in the operation of the devices. These defects can affect the credibility of a device that is supposed to be functioning with accurate precision.

Car LED light require a very high voltage to function and as such it is more of a capacitors and resistors dependents, rather than a simple circuits.

Because of the colourful transmission of its lights, the illuminations so reflected have been observed to be of inferior quality to the original rays of the sun. Therefore the rays of light generated cannot be seen as a perfect reflection of the original.

The blue and white LED lights generated have been observed to constitute a health hazard because of it’s over reflective nature therefore it does not pass the safety standard set by the constituted environmental regulatory body.

Because car LED lights pattern of reflection is constant, therefore it cannot be used where a reflection that is divergence or convergence in nature ?is required.

Blue LED light has also been observed to cause more light pollution that any other light generating appliances. Therefore, it should be operated under a very safe condition.

Why will your car not start in the morning?

Synthetic oils are improving all the time but there is still one problem that oil refiners have not been able to conquer – making engine oil more effective at lower temperatures. See it like this:

Premise 1: Oil becomes thicker in cold temperatures.
Premise 2: Engine parts do not move effectively without the lubrication oil offers.
Conclusion: In cold weather, your car is harder to start.

What your car also needs to start is fuel (petrol/diesel). Petrol cars use an ‘ignition compression’ method to start whilst diesel cars compress the fuel to ignite it. Petrol (and diesel) is oil that is refined to a higher spec so when it is cold, petrol contracts just like oil does – it becomes thicker. This is why some people will only buy fuel at night when it is colder! Old cars have a manual choke which allow you to judge how much more fuel your engine needs whereas, newer cars have an automatic choke that do this for you.

So now we know the basics behind why your car finds it hard to start on a cold morning, we can now discuss methods to make it start.

Tips for making your engine turn over on a cold morning

- A little sun light can warm your battery up. If you have the time and the sun is out, you can put your car in direct sunlight. Open the bonnet and leave it for 10-15 minutes.
- Be careful not to flood your engine with fuel otherwise your car definitely won’t start. If your engine won’t turn over the first time, don’t keep turning the key or holding it in position to hear the engine go chug, chug, chug, chug, chug, chug! Instead, turn the key for a maximum of five seconds and leave 30 seconds or more before trying again.
- Have your car serviced regularly. Change to a winter-grade oil if at all possible.
- Turn all of your electrical accessories off in the vehicle. So this means no lights, heater, wipers, and radio – anything that requires battery power should be switched firmly off.
- Don’t touch the accelerator when the car is either trying to start or has just started. You will cause damage to the parts as the oil is still thick and working its way around the engine.

And finally…

Stay with the car whilst you’re warming it up – thieves target car owners on cold days so don’t warm your car up for it to be stolen.

Well, according to automobile experts, when you drive around in a car that has brake lights that do not work perfectly, you are increasing your chances of being in an accident or even of being the cause of other motorists’ accidents. That certainly would not be something you would not like to be caught in the middle of.

With a growing population topping over 200,000 and Six Flags Magic Mountain to draw teens, Santa Clarita has seen an upswing in car accidents. Also contributing to the accident rate is California Interstate 5, a major north-south route that runs right through the Santa Clarita Valley. In 2006, there were five car accident deaths in Santa Clarita and 604 traffic accident-related injuries. Motorcycle accidents killed one and injured 90. DUI collisions took their toll, accounting for one fatality and 48 injuries. According to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department, local police responded to over 2,200 traffic collisions in 2007.

Predictably, red-light scofflaws contributed to many tragedies on Santa Clarita’s roads. In 2006, over 40 percent of drivers running a red light were caught on camera–with a cell phone glued to their ear. Ten percent of these lawbreakers were caught eating, drinking coffee or reading. The city now has red-light cameras at eight intersections and 11 approaches.

The red-light cameras tell the real story, showing motorists doing everything but paying attention to driving. Drivers need to put down their cell phones, the donuts and coffee and stay focused on traffic to avoid car accidents.

Fortunately, the red-light cameras have become pretty effective persuaders to would-be violators. Between July 2004 and July 2005, collisions were reduced by 80 percent, injury collisions dropped by 20 percent, and traffic violations decreased by 40 percent. Authorities say the reductions are the result of an increased awareness of the cameras and the behavioral changes they induce in drivers.

Also contributing to Santa Clarita’s car accident rate are teen drivers. In the city, 16- to 18-year-olds make up 12 percent of the driving population, yet they are involved in 25 percent of all driving collisions. Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for teens aged 16 to 19. Sadly, more than 60 percent of teen passenger deaths occur while another teen is driving. In the past several years, nearly 100 local teens lost their lives due to traffic collisions in the Santa Clarita Valley.

To save the lives of these young drivers, Santa Clarita has launched a comprehensive community effort. One of these is the Sheriff’s Teen Traffic Offender Program (STTOP). Residents call a hotline to report the vehicle license number of any teen they see driving dangerously. Since the program started in 2004, incoming reports to STTOP have numbered between 250 and 300 annually. One hundred percent of these calls receive follow-up, with intervention efforts by a city sheriff’s deputy targeting the drivers and their parents. Also helping to cut down on the accident rate is the Every 15 Minutes Program. National statistics show that every 15 minutes, someone dies in a traffic-related incident. This two-day program involves a graphic dramatization of an alcohol-related car crash and its aftermath, in which local high school students play the roles of the victims and drunk driver.
